What is the Balti Triangle?
The Balti Triangle is a famous halal food district in Birmingham, centred on Ladypool Road, Stoney Lane and Stratford Road in the Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath areas, approximately two miles south of the city centre. It is where the Birmingham Balti — a dish cooked fast in a thin pressed-steel bowl over a high flame — was invented in the 1970s by the area's Pakistani and Kashmiri community, making it one of Britain's most significant food districts.
Why is it famous?
The Balti Triangle is famous for two reasons: first, it is the birthplace of the Birmingham Balti — a dish that went on to become one of Britain's most popular curry-house staples, now served across the world. Second, it became in the 1980s and 90s one of the most famous food destinations in Britain, with coach tours arriving from across the country specifically to eat here.
At its peak the Triangle had dozens of Balti houses operating simultaneously. Most have closed as the area evolved — but a handful of the originals survive, and the district today hosts a dense concentration of excellent halal restaurants spanning Pakistani, Indian, Afghan, Kashmiri, Lebanese, Middle Eastern and African cuisines.
Where exactly is the Balti Triangle?
The Balti Triangle sits in the Balsall Heath and Sparkbrook neighbourhoods of Birmingham. The key streets are Ladypool Road (the main artery), Stoney Lane and Stratford Road. From Birmingham city centre it is a 10-minute drive or accessible by bus. Street parking is available around the area, though it gets busy on weekend evenings.

Shababs on Ladypool Road is the Balti Triangle's most recommended surviving original — still cooking the dish in the traditional way.
