Halal Chinese food in Birmingham: where to actually find it

Birmingham Halal · Updated July 2026

Asian noodle and rice dishes

Let's be honest about something most guides won't say: proper halal Chinese food is one of the hardest things to find in Birmingham. The Chinese Quarter is largely not halal, and "halal Chinese" often means a curry house with a chow mein section. But real options exist — here's the truthful map.

The real deal: Malaysian-Chinese

The Malaya Classic in the city centre is your best answer — Malaysian cuisine is heavily Chinese-influenced and, coming from a majority-Muslim country, natively halal. Char kway teow, nasi goreng, laksa: the flavours you're craving from a Chinese menu, no compromise needed.

The desi-Chinese tradition

Lahore Karahi Halal Chinese in Sparkhill represents the other lineage — desi-Chinese, the Pakistani take on Chinese food (think chicken Manchurian, egg-fried rice with a chilli kick). It's its own genre, beloved and divisive; reviews are mixed, so go in knowing what it is.

Pan-Asian dishes served at a food hall

Cast slightly wider and Birmingham's halal East Asian scene opens up: Yakinori in Selly Oak for Japanese katsu and sushi (4.4★, student favourite), Grounded Kitchen in Moseley for Korean-inspired rice bowls, and AQ Foodhall in Digbeth covering pan-Asian under one roof. Not Chinese, strictly — but if the craving is "wok, noodles, soy, heat," these deliver it halal.

What to order where

Malaya Classic: char kway teow first visit, laksa second. Desi-Chinese: chicken Manchurian with egg-fried rice, no substitutions. Yakinori: chicken katsu curry. Grounded Kitchen: the signature bowls. You're welcome.
